The BMW i8 was one of the cars on my bucket list to test drive this year. With a sweeping, futuristic design, and striking Gullwing (BMW refers to them as “scissor”) doors that recall the beloved 80s DeLoreans, the i8 is unlike any other car on the road today. It’s a lightning fast plug-in hybrid sports car can go 0-60 in 4.2 second but also boasts 75 mpg. It’s speedy and green (Leonardo DiCaprio and Al Gore would approve). Environmental consciousness never looked so good.
Entering the cockpit does take some mastery, but once you’re there, it’s a wonderful place to be. The leather and carbon fiber interior coddles and is classic BMW with all the technological accoutrements including the best in class iDrive controller. The interior can only seat two with room a back seat big enough to fit a Firkin. But who’s going to haul groceries in this as i8 owners will likely use their X5's for quinoa runs to Whole Foods.
Priced north of $130,000, you’ll like see the i8 parked at valet stands outside of Nobu and Cipriani.
